Boom cars and motorcycles have taken over this county. And law enforcement officials are doing next to nothing to stop it.
How many of you who live near a major road can go 10 minutes without hearing a vehicle that has been intentionally modified to make as much noise as possible, or some sound system that will rattle your windows? When was the last time you drove from one end of town to the other without having to put up with some vehicle making as much noise as they could?
Over the last several months I have tried to find out why there are so many vehicles around Carteret County that are so loud. For instance: motorcycles with no mufflers; cars and trucks with modified exhaust systems designed to make them louder; and those popular boom cars. We all know that these vehicles were made that way on purpose.
The first place I inquired about noise violations was the Morehead City Police Department. The first person I spoke to was Sgt. Harmon. I asked him why the police were not ticketing these vehicles. He said, “We have been kind of lax.” I asked him if it wasn’t against the law to remove the muffler from a motorcycle? He said “yes.” I told him I rode motorcycles for 20 years and found no pleasure in making my bike as loud as I could. He then told me that he, too, owed a Harley and that he had just replaced the exhaust pipes and that it was now a little louder that before.
He made me a copy of State Law 20-128, which states that individuals cannot drive a motor vehicle on the highway with the mufflers removed or an exhaust that is not like the factor installed and must be in good working order. In other words, you cannot modify your exhaust system to make more noise than what it did when it came from the factory.
About a week later I had a chance to talk to Sgt. Raines with the Highway Patrol. He said, “I hate those noises, too.” He said he had complained to County Commissioner Betty Hall and was told that the county had a 11:30 curfew on noise. He said he had also contacted State Representative Jane Preston and was told it would be too expensive to buy decibel meters for the Highway Patrol. I asked him why the Highway Patrolmen in the area were not giving tickets to the motorcycles that they could plainly see had no mufflers and that on at least five occasion I had observed motorcycles with no mufflers pass Highway Patrol cars. He never gave me a answer but referred to the fact that he “had only one Officer for the area.”
I mentioned to Sgt. Raines about a week earlier Sheriff Thomas was campaigning door to door and while he was on my front porch we observed four cars in a row run the STOP sign by my house and one of those boom cars came by and I asked the Sheriff if there wasn’t there something he could do about that. The Sheriff told me he would contact the Highway Patrol. I said to the Sheriff good luck–that I had already done that. Sgt. Raines said the Sheriff’s deputies had the same power as his men when it came to highway violations.
By this time I was starting to see a pattern: everybody was waiting for the other law enforcement agency to do the job of ticketing for noise violations. I went so far as to call the Morehead City Police Department one Saturday morning when I observed at least 30 motorcycles that were in the K-MART parking lot. It was quite obvious that at least about 12 had no sign of mufflers on them at all. The dispatcher said she would send an officer out to investigate. I went back out and sat in the parking lot to see if any tickets would be issued. When the patrolman showed up, he rode by them slowly and left as they were leaving. I was parked over 200 feet away and could hear the bikes quite clearly, even though they made a point not to make much noise because the policeman was still nearby.
When I called and asked why no one received a ticket, Lt. Wilder came by to talk to me. I asked why the bikes with no mufflers were not ticketed. He said that he “didn’t see anything wrong.” I then asked that was it not against the law to operate a vehicle without a muffler. He said “yes.” He then added “that if he ticked every motorcycle for not having a muffler he would be out there 24 hours a day seven days a week.” I knew this was going nowhere.
Over the next several weeks, I started asking questions of the patrolmen and patrolwomen whenever I saw them parked out behind the National Guard Armory. I asked them why these vehicles were allowed to make so much noise and not be ticked. They said, “I’ve never seen a motorcycle without a muffler,” “I’m not a mechanic; I can’t tell if it’s the right muffler or not.” I replied that if you can hear it from three blocks away, there is a 99 percent chance that it doesn’t have the proper muffler.
One of the policemen told me he would issue a ticket to a motorcycle he saw without a muffler, but he is also the one who told me he has never seen a bike with out a muffler. I talked to at least four policemen and got basically the same answers.
When asked about boom cars, they said when they heard them they asked them to turn them down. I think we all know how much good this does. As soon as they drive away it’s wide open again. We know that these people with more money invested in their sound system than their car or education are not going to leave it turned down. They did say they had cited several; I have my doubts about that.
I then talked to Major Johnson, an aide to the Police Chief. I asked her why nothing was being done about the loud cars and motorcycles. She told me that some of the boom cars had been cited. When I asked about the loud motorcycles, she said they all sounded loud to her. I told her that motorcycles with factory mufflers are not loud–not even Harleys. She said the police department had a Harley and it was loud. I told her it should be checked out because if it had factory mufflers, it would not be loud.
I finally had a chance to talk to the Chief of Police for Morehead, Chief Turner. I once again asked him about the loud bikes and cars. He said he had been expecting me. He said that I was the only one to complain about motorcycles. I replied that maybe that was because they knew that nothing would be done. He then said “that was not a priority with them that there were more important thing than motorcycles without mufflers.”
I really don’t expect the police department to drop everything and concentrate on loud vehicles, but I would expect that when an officer is traveling in his car and he hears one of these vehicles, he issues a ticket. This is not like someone who may be a few miles an hour over the speed limit because they weren’t paying attention to the posted speed limit. These loud vehicle were made that way on purpose to make a lot of noise. I then told him about a loud boom car that pulled up next to me and when I asked him to turn it down that all I got was foul language and a louder noise.
The Chief said “that unless he was doing something in a official capacity he would not say anything to someone to have them turn it down with the way some people are today.” It made me wonder if we have we all turned to being afraid to say anything because we think that someone may assault us. The chief led me to believe that the law that governs the loudness of vehicles would not be enforced unless more people complained.
The conclusion I have come to after talking to several other officers in different counties is that nothing is going to be done about these vehicles that roam our highways without a lot of outcry from citizens. Any law ignored by law enforcement is a green light for those who would break it. The ones who talked candidly did say that the reason no tickets are given is that there are several in every department who also have loud exhaust systems on their vehicle and that it is all right with them.
Overall, our law enforcement is doing a good job, but they have to remember that the laws passed by our elected officials were done so by request of the citizens to govern the everyday things that also make lining in this great state better such as a way to control noise.
If you would like to see something done about all these loud vehicles so you are not constantly assaulted by loud noise, give the Chief a call (241-0951). I’m sure he would like to hear from you.
This is an election year. Give the Sheriff a call. Call your County and State legislators.
Police departments don’t need a lot of expensive equipment to check vehicles for noise. Many towns and counties have passed ordinances that state that if you can hear the sound coming from a vehicle 30 feet away, it’s too loud. You are ticketed and fined, and your vehicle is impounded. The sound system is removed at your expense.
The state has a law that can cure the loud exhaust system noise without any equipment at all (20-128). Some of the police and the Chief have said when they do ticket these vehicles that it is a waste of time to go to court because it will be laughed or thrown out. It that is the case, then the police have done something wrong or we need new judges.
Now is the time to send a message to those who would purposely change their exhaust system that if you want to ride in our community you must be quiet. If you would like more information about how to stop this ever-worsening noise problem, go to www.noisefree.org. Remember: it won’t get any better until you complain.
It’s sad that we’ve come to a place where people can’t just be considerate. These loud vehicles have to go. I’m tired of this one punk ass kid going up and down my road revving his engine and burning rubber.
I wish he’d dissapear
i wish u would disapear people do that all the time and i love it to me its like a violin being played by an angle i also yell the to redline her beautiful you fucking boomer be all jealous and shit
Millennial here. Your life is sad. Instead of revving your car in a neighborhood like a jackass, go race it at a drag strip like a normal gear head.
I’m exhausted from lack of quality sleep because of these unruly, inconsiderate punk ass kids. Where’s the parenting? I know my parents would NEVER allow me to race the neighborhood with a vehicle that scares the piss out of you and prevents families from sleeping. With Covid, and working from home, it’s even worse. I’ve been on conference calls when people ask what that loud noise was. It’s pathetic!!
Countless times I have spoke to the Mayor and Police Chief in my town and nothing has changed!!!
I do my job and follow the rules and guidelines set in place. Why do police look the other way and do nothing? I’m tired of excuses.
I’m laying in bed at 6:30 in the morning and all you hear are loud mufflers.
I’m very sad about this.
Trust me I feel your frustration. I’ve developed a deep a serious hatred for people who drive loud cars and bikes. Noise pollution from loude exhausts is a much more serious issue than many realize. It’s more than just a silly nuisance.
The police do nothing because they too have loud personal vehicles. We are truly doomed to poor mental and physical health because of this lack of inforcement. You can talk until you are blue in the face about the damage loud noise causes us per scientific study. Autism, hyper-sensory disorder (20% pop), PTSD and the senior population don’t just *dislike* the sound it is viscerally alarming, tramatic…as if you were being attacked. Your mind may say “Hey, it’s just those assholes saying ‘Hey world, look at me!’ no worries”, but your more primal nervous systen says ALARM!!! My husband is not much bothered by the loud. I am constantly being pulled away from whatever I’m doing to subliminally get ready for *fight or flight.*
Also, school children are effected as well, there as been studies done back when car alarms were out of control that loud sound interrupt their learning.
We’re having the same freaking problem here in Santa Maria santa Barbara County California, we live in an area where the cops don’t patrol for reasons I don’t understand, they told me the reason why is cause the crime isn’t as bad as the west side of Santa maria, so your telling me, more crimes need to be committed to have police come patrol, r you f’ing kidding me!! There’s cameras on the stop lights and they don’t even use them there out of date. Santa Maria Police department is a flipping joke. But I’m going to fight this. I’m not going to just lay down. One of these days someone is going to loose control and crash right through someone’s backyard!! That’s what they say it’s going to take to have anything happen.. ass backwards laws. Good luck to those who are having the same issues we are!!
It’s the same in my neighborhood. Rattling my windows, boom cars, no muffler motorcycles and cars. No one around here seems to care.
I am sick and tired of this one punk in my neighborhood with an extremely loud boom car. I mean the noise was so loud that you can feel the vibration going through your body. In long term, that can damage anyone’s health. And nothing gets done! But ever since this pandemic and working from home, it has gotten worst! No police does anything about it!
Get their license plate number, find out where they live, find out who they are with public info searches.
Get a decibel meter and take video of them driving by with a readout of the decibel meter.
Collect evidence.
Sue them for public nuisance.
It’s so unfortunate there are people like you who are Millennials, definitely gives a bad name to the generation. I hope you learn to use proper grammar someday. They are complaining about their neighbor not claiming they rev the engine themselves. I’m glad you love the sound of loud cars but most people would rather not have their lives disturbed. Consideration isn’t a hard trait to adopt, consider it.
Noise just about blew out my ears today. I have been sick and tired of that car and motor cycle noise since I had to move to a busier street. It’s awful 😞.
I am not jealous. I love my 2017 Honda civic with XM Radio and a muffler that works. I love listening to music in my apartment too, but if a neighbor asks me to turn it down, I turn it down (even if I am playing “fight for your right”) so enjoy the beastie boys by all means but try not to take that shit literally.
Nice..
You are obviously an obnoxious inconsiderate slob. Age has nothing to do with it. I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 18 and always found the fat slobs with their loud bikes to be annoying. Why would they want to draw more attention to their ugly selves. Don’t give me that crap-loud pipes save lives. Safe driving saves lives. Observing speed limits, wearing a helmet, and not doing wheelies down the middle of the road is safe. Motorcyclist often don’t observe any of this. Shut up and keep your hobby to yourself – there’s no reason to disturb the peace of everyone.
I don’t know about anyone else but I got a louder exhaust on my bike so that people would hear me over their loud radios playing with the windows rolled up. The number of cars that pull out in front of me or change lanes on me have dramatically dropped since I got my loud pipes. I wouldn’t need to have a loud bike if more people would look out for motorcycles. For me, the loud pipes saves my life and the life of those that ride with me.
So you’re not safe if you’re going downhill? Your horn doesn’t work?
If motorcycles were safer (and quieter) than cars, would you still ride?
Learn to ride pal. Being hit by a car has little to do about being heard.
Total BS. Do a little reading and you’ll figure out that loud pipes are just to make you feel better about something else missing in your life.
And I can’t hear your pipes over my car stereo. But I can hear your stupid bike coming and going for miles when I’m at home. News flash. I’m no danger to you when I’m at home.
And next you’ll tell me it’s just a little noise. But after the 200th inconsiderate, anti-social racer wannabe it gets a little tiring.
Dont ride in blindspots and you will be fine. Loud pipes make a target more than they save lives.
You’re an inconsiderate P.O.S. if you drive anything loud. Get a different hobby. Once you infringe upon the rights of others and the law that is where you “right ends”. First and foremost, an individual has the right to live in peace and quiet. This superceeds your right to unnecessary noise and being a selfish and inconsiderate bastard. I’m so sorry you had parents who didn’t love you, but don’t take it out on the rest of us.
Yeah ok, I am sick of loud cars because I know the punks that drive them only do it because they have “Male insecurity” issues and are generally weak minded. I should not have to be annoyed 24/7 by these cars because guys these days have to have loud things thing feel manly since they didn’t have to go to war or get a job like the “Boomer” generation you seem to degrade.
Ok Dave are you braindead? You know the younger generations are really suffering in the workforce rn, right?
Just so you know, smartass, the frequencies emitted from those woofers are destroying your brain. Science. Stupid.
Ah the special snowflake replies. I suppose those lovely noisy engines have rattled your brain so badly that a literate English sentence is impossible. It must be wonderful in your shallow selfish little hole.
you are a loser idiot
im heavy into restomods and racing (and not a boomer- genx cusp). there is aplace to run the horses- your neighborhood street is not that place.
and in a community you are supposed to exercise consideration and good will to your fellow man.
are you really such a choad to deny peace to your neighbors? or were you too busy skipping civics to get high ?
Typical response of someone who can’t spell or write properly. You’re just a trolling miscreant who will experience major hearing loss if you happen to mature into adulthood. Go dig yourself a deep hole and jump in with all of your noisy “toys” and let the majority of the population enjoy their peace and quiet.
We moved to new neighborhood in nashville. We hate the intentionally loud car noise… My wife has yelled out the door at them when they speed by.
Just a bunch of assholes wanting attention I guess.
i’ve called the cops about it but they can’t watch the streets every minute.
I have wanted to yell so many times but I would be yelling all day because we live on a busy arterial. I’ve tried for a year to get over the noise of the wannabe racer and aggressive sounding pickup trucks but it never ceases to get my heart rate up.
Searching for a new home that is away from busy streets and ideally in a city with less douchebags, I mean car enthusiasts.
I’ve identified the problem: as long as the manufacturers continue making these loud vehicles, and as long as people exist to buy them and drive them aggressively because they’re azzholes, the problem won’t go away. You could find a quiet spot in a city not known for its wannabe street racers (do your research! 😑) and maybe hear less of them. You could get a house in the countryside but still be plagued by some hillbilly aggressive diesel trucks.
I agree with Mark “ Let’s face it; these people that drive these vehicles around to make noise, are not only slackers or useless, they have no purpose in life.”
I still blame the manufacturers though. Electric cars are not this loud.
It’s quite obvious from your comment that you need to see a psychiatrist soon and be put on medication.
It has nothing to do with a boomer generation. It has to do with mental illness pervasively growing today amongst the youth and the new generations.
Let’s face it; these people that drive these vehicles around to make noise, are not only slackers or useless, they have no purpose in life.
Google has spellcheck Millenial, gen x’er here. BtW U sk.
The only people jealous of you are your parents, they’re jealous of your for getting to live in their basement free of rent. But at least you have a loud car. That totally makes up for it. I guess.
Learn to spell…or if you’re deaf by now LEARN TO SPELL
You are a real piece of work
Played by an “angle?” Wow. You have a first class education.
Show off ASSHOLES WHO HAVE NO REAL MANHOOD NEED TO BE LOUD TO COMPENSATE MY 69 Z28 CAMARO WITH BLOWER WOULD BLOW ANYTHING THESE PUNK ASSES HAVE I IDLE IT THRU QUITE NEIGHBORHOODS ITS CALLED I HAVE CLASS AND RESPECT MY HARLEY IS VERY LOUD I SHUT IT DOWN ENTERING MY DRIVEWAY I NEED TO PROVE IM A MAN!
I agree with you Dana. These are “noise toys” driven by people who either don’t care or are completely clueless about the effect their damn motors have on everyone else. Sometimes I wish I’d been born before invention of the combustion engine – or better yet, that humankind had completely skipped over oil and gas power, and instead, refined wind and solar power and storage for them. Then our vehicles would be powered by electricity (as more are nowadays), which is quiet. The technology is better now but unfortunately, there will be ass hats who like that loud motor sound for a while yet.
Shut up hahaha
Won’t be laughing when someone crams your loud exhaust pipe up your ass.
e-cars are coming.
Yessss I can’t wait until the damn things are no longer an option. I drove an F150 that was QUiet! Lovely and fast. The noise isn’t necessary going 30 around a suburb or city. Obnoxious!
YES, YES AND YES! WE ARE ALL BEING NEGLETED BY THE LAW!! IT IS CRIMINAL !
Noise from custom exhaust systems are a major problem in The United States and other countries. European countries have been fighting this for some time.
I have found that discussing this with the drivers of these vehicles is not an effective solution. One of the most frequently used arguments is that the purchase of custom exhausts is perfectly legal. Laws are broken every day with legally purchased items. I can legally buy a hand gun. This does not mean that I can rob convenience stores with impunity.
I strongly recommend that you:
– Engage an attorney. This can be expensive so share the costs with your neighbors.
– Keep local law enforcement in the loop.
– Ideally – you should put calibrated decibel loggers and surveillance cameras up. Be sure to capture the audio with your video.
– Each neighbor should keep a running log of every daily high noise drive-bye. Share these with law enforcement and your attorney.
– All communication with the drivers of these vehicles needs to go through the attorney.
– Talk to your attorney about keeping local news media in the loop.
To get your case into a court of law, you need to establish probable cause. No community can afford to put law enforcement on every street. Probable Cause is typically established by an officer who witnesses the event. If law enforcement is around, the drivers of these vehicles go to ground very quickly. As soon as law enforcement leaves, they are right back at it. Scientific instruments and carefully maintained logs are often useful in supporting a determination of probable cause.
To the drivers of these vehicles this is a fun prank or harmless joke. This is something quite different to individuals and families who can no longer enjoy their homes.
Talk to your attorney about establishing probable cause in the absence of law enforcement.
– Calibrated decibel loggers can be used to show a significant increase in noise levels when these vehicles are about. They can also be used to show the schedule that these drivers are on.
– Sharing this with law enforcement can minimize the time that law enforcement needs to spend in your neighborhood.
– While law enforcement in most communities is spread thin, I strongly urge you to keep them in the loop – ask your attorney for the most effective way to pass information to law enforcement or let your attorney be your liaison with local law enforcement.
– Talk to your attorney about steps to take when more drivers join in the harassment.
– Consider creating a formal neighborhood watch group.
Logging is crucial. Work with your neighbors to produce a consolidated log of every pass these vehicles make. At minimum, track the following information:
Date
Time
Location
Make
Model
License Plate
Decibel Logs and videos are extremely useful.
Videos from surveillance and door bell cameras are useful to show drive-byes from multiple cameras.
Work with your attorney to establish probable cause for a Nuisance Complaint against the drivers of these vehicles. It is important to keep law enforcement in the loop. If your complaint is successful, a court order will be issued against the drivers.
Keep your logging and surveillance running during and after the case enters the court system. Most of the drivers of these vehicles will ignore the court order and retaliate.
Retaliation will almost always include additional vehicles and drivers. When they retaliate (and they will), the drivers are in violation of a court order. This is more serious than a Nuisance Complaint. Keep law enforcement and your attorneys in the loop.
This takes time, effort, and money.
The drivers of these vehicles will belittle your efforts and typically try to make your life miserable. They will typically include their friends in this effort. Do not respond in-kind. Your best response is to keep all responses to their provocations above-board and legal.
Now that’s a helpful post!
Thank you for this amazing reply and helpful article.
I agree 💯 they are nuisance
I live in Indiana and I am surrounded by these redneck idiots. I hate, hate, hate all the noise these as*****s are making. I am going to snap one of these days. This has got to stop. All day long, all hours of the day and night, I know other people hate it too but these stupid assholes always get away with everything. I think rednecks must run this stupid country.
Lauren, I’m with you and I echo your sentiments. The street I live on in Las Vegas is nowhere near the strip but you’d think it was with all of these a**holes with aftermarket straight pipes who gun it up and down the Blvd at all hours, weeknights included.
I used to live near the airport and I swear to you the AIRPLANES flying over my building weren’t as loud as some of these cars and bikes with straight pipes. It’s literally INSANE to me that this kind of noise pollution isn’t taken seriously. I’m a Pisces and we’re known to be naturally caring and empathetic people but these sociopathic cockroaches bring out a side of me I never wanted to come out.
My hatred for them runs is deep I literally hope to see one them get into an accidents (with a pole or a tree, not another car with normal humans behind the wheel) that either paralyzes them (so they can never drive again) or takes them out. My compassion for people who have none for others is nil. Why should I value their lives if they don’t value the mental health of others? Sone of them even get a kick out of tormenting people with their noise bcuz they know the chances of this CRIME being enforced are slim to zilch.
In my mind I am shooting at them from a rooftop, sniper style. I’m working towards moving back to Houston. The longer this goes on the crazier it will make me and I don’t want to end up on the news and in prison over these narcissistic sociopaths.
I’m with you, Steven. I find the problem to be worse here in Las Vegas than anywhere else where I go. This city is populated with mutant loud-arses, and it attracts loud-arse scum from everywhere else. It’s like, “hey, let’s take our loud-arses to the strip and race from red light to red light”. I’m 40-stories high and i can hear those losers’ ghetto mufflers through closed windows. I suppose they’re no different from the rest of the uneducated tchumpers.
I’m in Indiana, too. Police officers don’t want to enforce these codes that were enacted by our legislatures on behalf of their constituents. These codes also need more teeth (bigger fines, etc.). I think we need dedicated noise control officers and more code enforcement officers willing to do the job. It’s sad, but they will pribably have to be armed as well for their own safety or accompanied by a PO. There should be a way to install decibel monitors in the same way we have stoplight cameras and send out tickets to these offenders.
Really? I’m in L.A. and it’s all Mexicans doing it here.
I feel the same! I am from the state of Washington! And thank you! I am glad it is not just me dealing with the recent increase in noise lately. Reading these made me feel not alone. And that I am not weak or delusional. I also feel like I will snap one day!
Jennifer, same here! Washington state. I’m in a city known for its street racing history but I unfortunately did not know it before.
You’re not alone. It’s highly annoying behavior and science proves that we just need quiet to decompress.
My thoughts as well! I’m like, will anyone ever snap or put some fear into these guys? It’s very frustrating.
(“if he ticked every motorcycle”) Lt. Wilder is a jerk for using that oblique, placating boilerplate sarcasm! Police have been belligerent to me each time I reported ANY incident—they don’t want to do their job, especially when they need to confront the offender. Same old, same old.
I’ll be attending my monthly community meeting in San Diego next month & letting them know I will be gathering residents to take matters into our own hands, if need be. I moved away from downtown not expecting this behaviour in the suburbs. I won’t take another cop’s sarcasm on this.
downtown national city is terrible . im not kidding that the noise and vibration is all day long and late into the night and then it starts first thing again in the morning. my personal favorite is the guy who slowly moves down the street and revs to activate the car alarms. worst of all it seems to be getting worse.
I am also in San Diego County, east county area. Would love to participate in practical solutions. Both air and noise pollution have drastically increased in the Covid Era. Mufflers and Catalytic Converters seem to be going by the wayside.
Off-topic when did people that write articles like these stop proofreading them. We’re going backwards with our literacy in this country and this is coming from a junior college dropout that was on academic probation. What surprises me is that all these noise violations is an untapped fine gold mine that I would have thought the police would have exploited like they do with every other tax paying law breaker. Plus it offers opportunities for officers to generate side cash for the offenders that don’t want a ticket. They do everything they can to generate revenue, confiscate property and in Illinois if you have a small business they will call you and shake you down… I mean ask you for a donation for their fraternal order of police. Next time they call i’m going to tell them I have an idea for you that’s better than my measly donation. Start ticketing noisy vehicles and that should help you supersede your fundraising goal. But please don’t ticket me because I’m one of those annoying a-holes with a Harley that can make some people think there’s an earthquake happening when I ride by. I really do understand why people hate people like me.
If you don’t like it, just move to Europe. They have heavy taxes on engine displacement there so less modified muscle cars! Win win.
They only disappear when they are made to.
You all are not alone I think it has spread all over even Lakewood wash I pray to the wrath gods to make it flood just enough to slow them down or make it snow hard in the winter👍
It’s getting worse and worse, I don’t understand why the police allow it
Its gotten worst in Lakewood wash I feel you guys and it’s now 2022 all I can say to those who does that intentionally is kharma, what else can we do the cops no longer wanna get involved. I remember back in the 90s if your vehicle was too loud you would get pulled over and not only that if you where a military personnel you would hear it from your superiors. If I had the money I would love to move out! But the homes and everything else have gone way up!
I completely agree with what youve said and done. We’ve actually decided to sell our home because of this very issue. I asked one of the cops here why tickets weren’t being written for violation of the noise ordinance and he said the people driving those cars couldn’t afford to pay the ticket anyway. ????? So now we’re writing tickets based on who can afford them? Interesting. We live in a historic district and no one give a flying rats ass.
It’s sad that you felt you had to sell your home and move because your right to peace in your home was essentially taken from you, by these ass hats and their obnoxious “noise toys” – loud cars and motorcycles. That is so wrong. Somehow, human beings need to figure out sooner than later how to get rid of this behavior. It is common for police departments to have a “no chase” policy because those people ride or drive their toys often over 100 mph, so chasing would endanger everyone. Besides the awful noise, it is a wasteful and frivolous use of a non-renewable energy source. Bad enough we have to use it at all, but for this? As a species called “Homo Sapiens” – “sapiens” meaning “wise” or “intelligent,” we humans should be able to figure out how to eliminate behaviors such as this, that hurt other human beings. If everyone troubled or diminished by this type of noise contacted their city council, representatives and state police, things might improve. This crap is everywhere.
Learn to appreciate the internal combustion engine
I look forward to the day you become one of the motorcyclists killed on their shitty bikes 🙂
Haha. I am a loving kind person but I rank the owners of bikes and cars modified to be super loud in the same category as rapists and child molesters. I wish death on them.
Me, too. I keep hoping I hear a crash, and it’s them.
OMG wishing death to noisy motorists is absolutely repugnant. You people are WAY worse than the noise problem.
OMG me too
@fumbleroosky Really? When your peace and mental health are constantly violated and you are unable to do anything about it, it literally becomes like torture. How about you let me run a leafblower in your ear for 9 hours?
Worst invention ever.
I totally agree with you. I live in Miami where low-lives, people who are nobody but want to be somebody, feel the need to call attention to themselves by driving souped-up engines and for the whole world to hear them. The cops here love to write tickets for any violation, they get a bonus, so this is a no-brainer if they enact a law prohibiting these scum from popping their exhausts.
I am a visitor to S Florida and have lived in many parts of the USA ?? There are more Morons with loud crap on 2 and 4 wheels here then any place i have been ! But it does not surprise me ?? This is a real dump truck part of the world climate and everything else with it ! !
I found the worst of this shit is up north in New England, Vermont and the like, also west coast is ridiculous, the major cities like Atlanta, Miami,
But a lot of your mid sized towns and cities in Florida are not near as bad, but in all reality it’s a growing problem and no one in any states has tried to stop it before it got so out of hand
But this is misery inducing whether it be from a modified bike or car or boombox, it’s horrible to have MY ears literally ringing and hurting, don’t the law enforcement staff know that if someone’s ears are physically hurting and or ringing then damage is likely happening, I have a right to not have my hearing permanently damaged by someone else !
There’s a very interesting…and unsettling article on what else is behind boom cars at https://www.heavenlymanna.net/christianArticle.php?article_id=410
There’s a sinister plot to ignore the problem. We’re headed for lawlessness…almost there now when police do nothing. The stinking miserable souls who make the noise know that they have freedom to disturbed others without worrying about any form of punishment.
That’s a great piece. The obnoxiously loud cars & motorcycles are all over my state. Add that to the other vehicles (there’s not enough crime on my street to justify the excessive siren shrieks). & you have to wear earplugs or headphones in your own home to have peace, at least in my neighborhood. I have heard of police using their sirens to harrass Targeted Individuals, and I believe this whole noise issue is the government. attempting to promote unrest and even cause PTSD in people. I’m not paranoid, I’m clairvoyant. 5g is no good for our health, either. That’s not going away.
That’s partly why the cops don’t address it.
There’s no such thing as clairvoyance. If you actually believe you have paranormal powers then please go see your gp and they’ll refer you to a therapist for a psychological evaluation. Prozac is a wonder drug to start with. I’ve been on Prozac for 27 years and it saved my life.
Sorry, but there’s no such thing as clairvoyance, ESP, etc. Science has debunked the paranormal over 100 years ago. But there is scientific proof on how mentally and physically harmful noise is to humans and animals. The world was a much quieter environment half a century ago.
Please stop the noise!!! I need to sleep so I can be good to work next day.
SHORT ANSWER: For a good night’s sleep, try a combination of a room air-filter and soft-foam ear plugs. I had the same problem, and now I sleep very well. The air filter (which I purchased for my allergies) creates a soft, white noise that helps drown out the harshness of the noise polluting thunder-thugs outside while the ear plugs give your ears protection and your mind peace. THE LONG ANSWER. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s in a town where loud vehicle ordinances were regularly and strictly enforced, so when I moved to the state of Washington and heard that clearly NOTHING is ever done here about the noise pollution of boom-cars, loud bikes and even louder “sport”-car exhausts (“my car is tiny, but my noise is HUGE!”), I was quite surprised. And don’t even get me started on the leaf-blower trolls, chop-saw ogres, power-washing fiends, 7am lawn mowers and the rest of the “what can I buy that’s LOUD!?” crowd. After years of putting up with these thunderous noise-polluters and their intentional disregard for anyone’s right to peace or quiet, I came to similar conclusions as the author of this post; unless there is either a concerted outcry from the majority of the population (or by a small group of very annoyed and highly influential rich folks), the rest of us will be left to invest in our own forms of noise protection and suppression. The thunder thugs are folks who feel cheated by life and who don’t believe the world pays enough attention to them. They find gratification in their ability to irritate and annoy others with noise pollution and they aren’t going to change unless laws are enforced. And since the police show no interest in getting involved, the only solution I’ve ever found for a great night’s sleep is the combination of noise suppression and good ear protection in the form of an air filter, which drowns out the hum of the zombie-drones, and ear plugs which give me the deep quiet I need for deep sleep. It’s like Covid. Yes, I’d MUCH RATHER live without a mask. But I’d also rather LIVE, wearing a mask, than get sick and die without one. Until the world gets on board with really taking care of themselves and each other, I’m wearing a mask. Similarly, yes, I’d MUCH RATHER live ear-plug free, but until there’s a broad based outcry against noise pollution, an air filter and ear plugs keep my ears safe and my night’s sleep long & peaceful.
The rich never suffer these low lives. That is why they alway vote to protect and fund ( at your expense) scumbags/deadbeats/ lowlife/ mooches/illegals. They, in their ivory tower, can clean their consciences by making you( hard working citizen) pay/fund/ suffer these people and their disrespectful, third worldly behavior.
This is so true.
The whole masking wearing regime is proven to be ineffective. If mask wearing worked so well then why are all of the mostly liberally run states having the highest number of Covid cases? If mask wearing was so effective then why do so many business have to be closed down? It’s bureaucratic bullshit! Thank you to such lovely attention grabbing whores like Gavin Newsom who thinks everybody must follow HIS rules except for himself and his scatter-brained, shitface aunt Nancy. Fuck the masking wearing and fuck the governmental oppression, destruction of businesses and live’s, and the fuck the Chinese for manufacturing the Covid virus.
Omg, really? Talk about noise.
the noise from loud vehicles is an attack on quality of life, and affects mental health.
I am 62 years old, but when i was a teen, i remember getting tickets for load exhaust and getting a week to get it fixed. They enforced the law then. Now anything goes, run your cars loud, tailgate and dont use turn signals is the norm.
I live in a city where this loud ass bullshit takes place, I’m sick of it. All these idiots driving these pansy ass cars ALL desperately seeking attention (they buy them JUST to be assholes and annoying). Of course law makers or law enforcement not doing crap about it like they don’t care about our wanting to be quiet. Those P.O.S. driving these fucking noise makers… Here’s a BIG fuck you to y’all!
Right on! I’m so f***ing tired of this. I’m thinking of filling a bunch of balloons with shaving cream and tossing them at these assholes. There is an atm driveway less than 25 feet from my patio, it’s insane the noise I hear. Interrupts my phone calls and tv. Something needs to be done!
I sooooo agree. We moved to a new neighborhood in Nashville…it was a big mistake…the assholes don’t give a shit about the racing and noise they.make late at night !! They even do donuts at the fourway and slide toward houses… assholes !!!!
That is so true, It has a very real effect on physical as well as mental health as well. Everyone needs to contact their representatives and draw attention to the noise problem. Humans need to be discouraged from a hobby that is obnoxious, dangers, and that diminishes the quality of life of everyone around, wherever they drive their “noise toys.” This hobby denies the rest of us the right to peace and quality of life in our homes. And it is a frivolous waste of energy. It’s got to stop.
I know, I totally agree! It’s not so much the motorcycles anymore, (in fact I read the newer ones are quieter now). But, those cars! Insanely loud! Also, think of the effect on wildlife, pets, even tress & plants are known to pick up vibrations! Dogs can hear many times more than we can & this is just total abuse!

A few potatoes and a watermelon stuffed in an exhuast system usually does the trick to quiet these massengill spokesmen who think everyone has to endure listening to their noise.
Noise and speed cameras like the ones in Europe would be helpful. Cars that are too loud and fast definitely are causing harm too society. It is unfortunate that this immature and inconsiderate behavior has not been put in check; but present and future technologies may eventually make this a thing of the past. Silence is golden.
I have a neighbor with no exhaust system on his old truck. The header pipes come directly out of the engine and stop with nothing attached. He starts and idles his truck literally every few hours and sometimes idles it for up to 20 min before he leaves in 1st gear all the way down the street. He comes and goes all hours of the day and night. Sometimes just 5-10 minute trips. On his return he drives all the way up the street to make a u-turn only to come roaring back in 1st gear and park. It’s so insanely loud. There are some people who enjoy bothering others. This is the way they get the attention they have always yearned for. Pathetic. Hope they move soon.
No way should you have to put up with this idiot. Take pictures of him driving his noise toy (discreetly of course), and a video that would include the noise too. Then press charges of disturbing the peace. See if you can rally your neighbors too. This guy wouldn’t last a month in my community.
A friend shared a story of how someone she knew dealt with a similar problem. It was an ass hat and his loud car he’d rev up every day. When a neighbor asked him nicely to not do so, as it was loud and disturbed the peace, he was rude. Then one day he turned on his obnoxious car and almost immediately it choked up and shut up, as the engine just jammed up, destroyed as a result of the SUGAR that a fed-up neighbor had put in the idiot’s gas tank. The engine was destroyed and irreparable from the effect of sugar getting introduced into the pistons, the system. He later moved away. A sweet ending to the story!
What happens if the kids parents act just like him. Time to move.
I totally understand your plight. Live in GA and have new neighbors with loud muffler chargers and all their friends that visit gave the same loud ass cars. He just bought a motorcycle to add to the noise. It is loud as hell too and his friends gave who visit have motorcycles too. They are renters and don’t care. Lived in my home for 21 years and buying it. How can I get rid of these idiots? I miss my peace and quiet.
Neighborhood watch groups need to start filming and reporting these thugs. Always make sure to get the license, too. That’s free money for police departments if they want to collect. If the cops still won’t act then we could have a web site that exposes this behavior to potential employers, romantic interests, etc. If we’re really lucky some noise-hating vigilantes will set fire to their intentionally loud crapmobiles.
I keep hoping we’ll get some noise-hating vigilantes in our area, clever ones who will never get caught. So many reasons to hate this noise!
Hah. Neighborhood watch groups are too busy reporting people who walk through the neighborhood. Because criminals are only on foot and never drive vehicles. Or some other nonsense reasoning like that…
Hello,
Starting approximately in November 2019, a person, or group of people, have constantly been accelerating their cars in front of my building. They do it at night, or early in the morning (sometimes even midday) which disturbs the sleep of everyone in my neighborhood (seriously, their engines are VERY loud, you have no idea). I ignored it when it first started, thinking they would eventually stop, but it’s only gotten worse, as they do it daily and multiple times in the day. The police don’t do much because these people vary the time that they drive in front of my building, making it impossible to catch them in their act. I honestly don’t know what to do or who to turn to. I’m thinking of moving out but I don’t have that much money.
How wrong and unfair you have to put up with this crap, and consider moving. Try contacting your representatives and city council for wherever you live. Police can’t always do much about these people. They must be caught in the act. You might try just staying up and watch for them, then discreetly get pictures of the drivers, their license plates and cars during the act. And take videos with your phone to get the noise as well. Don’t get caught! Sounds like a nightmare. Good luck.
It has gotten like that where I live too. I’m looking to move, too, as soon as I can.
Since stay at home orders began in Virginia, I’ve noticed an increase in the number of loud cars and motorcycles running up and down columbia pike throughout the day and night. I assume since these non-essential people are now free in the daytime, they have nothing better to do than roam around Arlington. And because there’s so little no traffic, they’re free to really rev up their obnoxious noise makers. Clearly they don’t realize (or care) that there are waking up already stressed-out health care workers trying to sleep in the day. I’ve contact both the police and Arlington code enforcement office and received zero support from either. I’m hoping you might be able to shed some light on this situation. Why aren’t the police stopping vehicles that are obviously too loud. In fact, what are they even doing on the road at all?
I laugh when I hear people say we all in this together, when I hear assholes revving up their vehicles just for the fun of it? Aren’t health care workers on the front line of this war? Shouldn’t we be doing EVERYTHING we can to help them? Is asking a bunch of thoughtless motorheads to be quiet a step too far?
@ Bob Reeder. See my first coment above
However there would be technology able to enforce the behavior but unfortunately the tables would turn and that would cause a sense of fear to those causing the noise.
What I’m talking about is a monitoring device that records vital data when the sound reaches above a certain dB level. Obviously the cost would be somewhat high, but may be more efficient when it’s placed in areas where it happens more often.
There are ways to ensure that the monitoring only happens when the cause occurs, so it can remove some other side effects of such system.
I completely agree that they are a nuisance, and I also understand the patrols point of view where it would be a daunting task to do in person, however it really doesn’t have to be done in traditional methods sort of to speak. There are so many other ways in which tax dollars get wasted on ineffective solutions, might as well invest in one that does.
Hi Bob, Try contacting your representatives, all the way up to the Governor. The police can’t always do much and must catch these assholes in the act. Maybe higher authorities could assign officers to focus on this problem. Please don’t give up! Good luck. You will make the world that much better, just by drawing attention to this problem. The more people do, the more likely those who could do something about it will take notice, and not give up so easily.
Diana, searching this forum to find sold advice & wise comments. I have begun contacting my district’s representative. At this point, I’m just getting someone in his office (no decent politician or salesperson dare speak to their constituent/customer face to face!). With this attitude, I wonder if ANYONE is listened to. Yes, going to the Governor is a great idea, but how do I force him to listen?? I believe the only way to push these a-holes is to get something on our election ballots, but how?? I don’t know the first step. Please advise.
You’re wasting your time complaining about this. The cops don’t care. It’s all the Trump people making as much noise as they can because they have no brain to make their lives better. It’s called the dumbing of America or as your president would say, the poorly educated.
The loud turds in my neighborhood sport a Biden/Harris yard sign. You can be an ass, no matter who you vote for.
No they don’t. All Trumpers do is lie all and eat lies all day long. So stop lying.
Im a Biden supporting, progressive socialist liberal, science minded, rational thinking atheist with a very long and smelly hipster beard; I also play very loud bass guitar. I play my 6 string Yamaha bass through my 25,000 watt Peavey amp with four 21 inch woofers in the cabinet. At max volume it peaks at 165 decibels. And that’s how I play my bass at max volume inside of my duplex with all the windows open for everyone to hear my great bass playing skills. I have pissed off more people than you can imagine. I’ve frightened little kids to tears and drove tired mothers into mass hysteria. But I know my rights to enjoyment. Biden is my man and he’ll protect our rights to jam as loud as we see fit. Bass is great! Cum on and feel da’ noise! Biden-Harris 2020! I’ve been a loyal American Atheist Society member since 2010.
This is either a really good troll post or you’re one of the saddest losers I’ve ever seen post on the internet. And bro I’ve been on the internet a long time. For your sake I’ll assume this is a troll job and give you props for portraying an insecure loser so convincingly.
You’d be 💀 if you were my neighbor. I have a zero tolerance policy for your kind.
Everyone has a right to enjoyment AT THE RIGHT PLACE AND THRE RIGHT TIME. Wherever the hell you live, your management must kick you out. Like I said, there are appropriate places for certain activities. Infringing on other’s rights is plan wrong.
You are bragging about being an idiot.
Why are you bragging about being a sociopathic POS? Is a badge of honor to you people?
Try to focus on the problem. Noise.
You are so right. Thank you
David, are you ever right. Well, it’s 7 months into the new presidency, yet no one seems to get the message. In actuality, it’s not who’s sitting in the Oval Office at this point. Cops are cops, idiots are idiots.
Cops (except the hopped up testosterone driven ones) care less about abating crime. When I was reporting about the daily occurrences at the park across the street that were endangering our communities safety & is bleeding into more dangerous crimes, they would call me, belligerence seething. Of course, my husband blamed me also, making it doubly hard on me. Now that it’s the loud, speeding cars (one just set off a car alarm in my ear yesterday!), the police told me they can’t do anything about it all unless they see it WHILE telling me they won’t create speed traps bc these fools somehow fight the tickets.
Seriously, what can we, as citizens deserving quiet and safe enjoyment, do? These freaks are doing donuts in front of the new fire station!!!
That’s a pretty self serving deflection of responsibility and doesn’t help solve anything. Equally as many rich Democrat adults and their children are making outrage freaking noise in my neighborhood. They can afford even more expensive cars that create even more noise and with stealthy cut off switches. Focus on the problem. It’s the lobbyists and ALL politicians that allowed this noise terrorism to take over once quiet neighborhoods and every street in the country. It is torture and people will eventually take the stress out on these drivers or their cars
Thankful to read this post and see these replies. It’s starting to feel like I can’t live on this planet anymore, given how loud noises are absolutely everywhere. Drives me absolutely insane. My only hope, at this point, is that electric vehicles take over sooner rather than later.
Yes, I’m with you there! I sometimes fantasize about how different and more peaceful the world might be if somehow, humanity had bypassed the filthy fossil fuels and combustion engines, and instead, continued to refine wind and solar energy. Humans had been using windmills for centuries – and they were aware of placing structures and dwellings to maximize benefit from the sun! Our process as a country was sadly set back when Reagan got in. But fortunately the Obama Administration helped to reignite renewable energy development. Now it’s more common to see electric cars. Hopefully humanity can finally get rid of the noise, someday.
Diana, I have had the same exact lament; that mankind had never developed the internal combustion engine. The past summer was absolute hell for me.
I have been working ta home since March 2020 and every day my house hummed from morning until late afternoon from the cascade of landscapers mowing lawns and running leaf blowers. I had to plug in my ear buds with music to keep my sanity. And this is inside my house with the AC running and the windows closed.
I feel you on the lawn service noise, that’s my neighborhood 24/7. If it’s any consolation (and it is to me in a way I’m not entirely proud of) there is more and more evidence emerging of PM2.5 particles that are generated by lawn equipment (and car exhausts) being really damaging and toxic to humans. The people running those blowers 8 hours a day every day are literally killing themselves and maybe if enough of them develop lung cancer we as a society will start to make some changes. But the real guilty parties are the people hiring these poor saps to poison themselves on their behalf because they’re too lazy and entitled to take care of their own lawns. They deserve the blame for making this practice a normal part of suburban living, but of course the poor and uneducated workers are the ones sucking this poison every day and catching COPD and cancer.
Hope you don’t think the electric cars are going to stop the noise. Car makers are making systems that are electronic and make the same noise as a gas car with loud mufflers.
They would probably develop some computer-generated noise for their electric vehicle so it would still be obnoxious. I’ve heard of some vehicles that can actually do that now, computer-enhanced loud-engine “tough” noise (like Mustangs, Chargers, etc.). I live about two blocks from the sheriff’s station and very close to a traffic light. I hear these assholes squeal their tires and have insanely loud engine noise taking off from the stop light, but the noise stops as they get close to the sheriff’s office. I hate this community I live in now and would like to find a quiet place to live.
Carol, I am in the same situation as you. I live in a college town and my neighborhood gone from single dwellings occupied by middle class, working class families to groups of college students renting them. This year there are punk students living across the street. One has a loud Mustang and revs it at all hours. I had the cops out but they tell me that have to catch him. Yeah, all talk. The punk runs the stops sign every time as well and I have about a dozen instances on film. I am going to get that little bastards ass fined by hook or crook.
Great writeup. I am with you on this. Loud bikes and cars are a plague here in Columbia, SC
Here in the Banana Republic of South Florida we have lots of super loud cars barelling down the roads with excessive speeds. Law enforcement does not exist.Traffic laws are a farce.
Until it affects rich liberals nothing will be done about it.
Truth.
Same here at San Ramon California. Used to be a quite place. Nowadays these street punks ruled the road, rogues student-pilots ruled the skies. If you complained, then they will retaliate you through constant harassment, police is not very helpful…
Same in Concord, CA, where I live. Used to be quiet, now it is an utter nightmare! Every 5-10 minutes some car goes by rambling loudly with its’ modified exhaust system. The other night, a motorcycle screamed by on CA680 which is a good 1.5 miles from my house and the noise that motorcycle made was so loud and high pitched, it was almost painful! The manufacturers themselves now produce loud cars, Mustangs and Chargers which come insanely loud right out of the factory!
If somebody starts a signature campaign to ban loud cars and motorcycles, I will sign!
For me it’s a constant torment. It’s painful to have to listen to these vehicles as they tear down my street all day and half the night,
I can’t take it anymore. I am getting a very bad attitude against these little inconsiderate bastards.
Check out ‘thousands’ of street razors ‘have no concern for anyone’. YouTube Maybe this is part of the reason is happening more.
You don’t get it. A lot of them are off duty cops, corrections officers. Also their snitches.
It’s getting aggression out like a baby would do, me make loud noise bam bam bam. You never see them with women, something us lacking there I think.
I AGREE. I CURRENTLY LIVE IN SANTA MONICA CALIFORNIA , ON OCEAN AVENUE, FROM DAWN , PAST MIDNIGHT THESE LOSERS DRIVE THESE CRAP BOXES AND FERRARI’S , LAMBOS, (MUSTANGS AND DODGE CHALLENGER AND CHARGER’S ARE THE WORST! THE SOLUTION? LET’S PETITION OUR LAWMAKERS TO ENFORCE THIS NOISE CODE, AND GET THIS ON THE VOTING BALLOT – CARMAKERS LIKE DODGE AND FORD , FERRARI, LAMBO, AND MASERATI’S ( THE NEXT WORST) CHARGE THESE CAR BUYER’S A HEFTY LUXURY /NOISE / ENVIRONMENT TAX! WE SHOULD ALL PETITION OUR LAWMAKERS/ CONGRESSMEN TO ENFORCE AND MAKE THESE LAWS MANDATORY. WITH MANY POLICE DEPT. FACNG A HUGE CUT IN FUNDING, THIS WOUD BRING SUBSTANTIAL REVENUE .LET’S TAKE OUR CITIES BACK! IF THEY WANT ATTENTION, THEY WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT!
Totally agree…The car manufacturers are complicit in this trend. If you listen to a stock exhaust of a 1986 Corvette alongside that of the current Corvette, with the stock exhaust…the newer vette is shockingly loud, the old Corvette is quiet as a church-mouse. The manufacturers even get around existing regulations by incorporating a butterfly valve that makes it louder as the RPM of the engine passes certain speed. The thinking on a crude level is, “the louder, the more power it has”.
Federal laws are not enforced as is, even though the establishment of standards needs to be refined & quieted much more…typically, the standards are for idling and an unspecified higher RPM…this vagueness needs to stop.
Police didn’t aggressively enforce DUI laws until Mothers Against Drunk Drivers got the statutes changed & DUI busts became HUGE money-makers. Modify the statutes to where noise violations would bring in big bucks, & we’ll see enforcement. It shouldn’t be that hard to modify municipal codes. Noisefree should create a blueprint for action. Can’t believe it would be that difficult to implement. If discovery of an intentionally modified car would bring a 10K fine, this should do the trick.
I don’t know if it is because emissions tests are done just by OBD-2 and not much more now – but I have noticed a massive uptick in past 3 years of trucks, motorcycles, and small Honda civics all modified – and they do it deliberately to backfire – there is a guy who had a lowered Honda who you can tell has deliberately made it backfire so loud it is as if a gun shot is going off.
Maybe with Biden in we can get something on this – because state and local laws are not cutting it at all.
Federally – under Trump – the EPA has been neutered. So these guys (not a single female I have seen do this yet – it’s therefore a small Dick syndrome (I am a guy too)…but I digress – there is no need at all for this other than to peacock and tell everyone around you “hey look here – I have such a small dick I need to blast my exhaust at you – look at me look at me!!!”
These guys should be required to have a psychological exam too – because I bet 7 out of 10 of them are violent either to their wives or others or both.
This is way more than just about noise. It is about little fuckers getting away with deliberately hurting people day in day out, including children.
As you can guess I live right next to a road that has over the years due to GPS become a cut through for people – and a lot of them are just punks or pissed off men on motorcycles without a helmet.
The best is when at 3 AM we get in the summer a guy who clearly had a one night stand and is leaving early and revs his motor cycle as load as possible – just so he can wake everyone up. I am hoping he caught HIV or something – because punks like that just deserve what they get. I am a forgiving person – but to people who do this deliberately – it’s beyond compare.
They are deliberately taking away our rights to happiness – amd 99 percent of everyone else – if we were in Wild West days (which is argument I always hear them say – that democracy lets them do whatever they want and we have too many laws) – if we were back in pre-1880 – these guys would be hung or shot and ptoblem deterred
The simple reason the police refuse to do anything: they are afraid of these guys and or sometimes bike riders themselves. They don’t want more enemies – even though they claim they are not afraid – they are. “Tough guys” have a tendency to intimidate – even the police.
Hopefully they will rot in hell for at least a thousand years or so (provides no other sins committed) with a loud Harley backfiring to their skull and then they will realize the shot they did to people.
Fuckers – just plain and simple fuckers.
Found you through Google. Glad there are others out there… Feel your pain.
It’s completely out of control here in Hampton Roads (Norfolk) Virginia. Mostly cars actually. My window is open a little right now (11:26 pm) and every 5 minutes I hear one of those shi!ty modified exhausts from 1/3 mile away. I don’t see it changing. Not enough people even know what peace and quiet is anymore, and officers don’t seem slightly interested in enforcement. I am truly considering giving up everything I have here just to get away from the noise.
I do look forward to electric performance cars blowing the doors off of crappy, loud offending cars, but in numbers, it’s a long way off.
I hear you. I moved away from Norfolk, VA last year to a different State altogether and I can vouch for what you and others are expressing. I lived in 5 points and would occasionally hear jets from the airport if the wind was right. That was nothing compared to the clowns driving their mod cars up and down military highway at all hours simply to make as much noise as possible. Evidently, one of the major attitudes that has emerged in the last 5-8 years is this: doing things that affect others negatively somehow = strength. So, we now get crappy displays of immaturity in the form of look-at-me and my poopy diaper-mobile. Listen to my noise while I raise my middle finger to the sky sums it up nicely. Each reality-TV/youTube trend has to be outdone by the next insecure man-child searching for an audience so you gotta wonder what ugliness is next.
HI Guys, I like your courage and transparency. I would first like to say that any chief of police who say the conduct of these modified exhaust operators and Boom cars are not a priority are not aware that this is a road hazard now. The police should have no fear to enforce a blatant violation on our streets. If they are afraid they should turn in their badge and get a job at taco bell. There is a post here on a Seminole county law enforcement web-site, about these overly excessive loud vehicles posted initially February of this year and there are over three thousand and eight hundred views on this topic (Modified Exhaust a Road Hazard) I’ll leave the link at the bottom of this post if you like to view it. 🙂
Small dick Harry, lol , u nail it buddy. These little pieces of sh___are disrespecting the community and they are little cowards who can drive away from their dirty little stinky sad noise they leave behind from their smelly a__h_____. (We should go up to them with a loud speaker and yell in their ear when we feel like it, see if they enjoy disrespect like they do to fellow Americans.lol) Mind boggling that law enforcement is not doing their job across the country of enforcing this blatant in your face violation on many levels.I think this stems down from poor leadership at the top, at this time in 2020.
This whole country should follow California’s lead with the $1000.00 dollar fine.(and a dedicated task force to remove these machines off our roads) Our parents and kids drive on these roads and this kind of behavior can cause an accident and hurt them really bad or kill them.(for what so an angry coward can vent) Crazy Crazy
If they call this a hobby, create a venue out in the woods where they can blow their socks off if they want to, but not on our roads where we have loved ones lives being jeopardized.
Thank you for this post.

I confronted a “kid” once who was going up and down my street revving, speeding, and blasting loud bass in his purple clown car Dodge Challenger. At 1:30 in the morning I had enough of this moron’s antics. He was parked in the street away’s down from my house, and when I approached his car I expected to see some punk kid behind the wheel. The “kid” driver happened to be a balding middle aged old coot behind the wheel. I was so pissed, my adrenalin was at its peak, I told this old “kid” off. I got the usual response from the kind of cretin that drives a senseless muscle car, “F-you go to hell” he spews out at me. I probably shouldn’t have confronted the idiot but I was pissed off big time. I did get his license plate number it was one of those personalized plates (easy to remember:) and I reported him to the county skheriff’s office. After that insistent I didn’t see Bozo in his extra noisy purple clown car again. Mind you I live in an upper middle class, semi rural community. The majority of people who live around here are respectable professionals. So, to have some idiot in a brash muscle car come zooming down my street again and again with all of his egregious racket in tow disallusioned me. I’m just glad the jerk never returned. Hopefully it was just a fluke that he ended up in my street.
If your “daily driver” has a loud exhaust, then you ARE an asshole! NOBODY admires you, everyone hates you! You are an inconsiderate brat that has NO manners or regard for anyone except your own selfish “look at me” immature self.. If someone shoots you after you pass their home, I won’t testify against them…
Nice Jimmy, The challenge is the authority in charge of our roads is not doing their job. There’s not doubt in this neighborhoods mind. Lot of pissed off people here.
I’m having issues in my neighborhood every night and these assholes keep going up and down my street every single night with there loud motors till the morning time throughout the night and I text a tip all the time and the cops don’t do nothing about this I’m tired of nothing getting done about this when there out there driving reckless
It’s never gonna fucken end!!!
i called local police and they said if I have the address of loud vehicle to call when its at home and they will come out and check it with a decible meter. People need to call on their inconsiderate neighbors and make it easy for cops to write a ticket
Right on Dave 🙂
Arlington – The American Dream City. More like a waking nightmare. Avoid the mid-cities of DFW in Texas.
Yeah ok, I am sick of loud cars because I know the punks that drive them only do it because they have “Male insecurity” issues and are generally weak minded. I should not have to be annoyed 24/7 by these cars because guys these days have to have loud things thing feel manly since they didn’t have to go to war or get a job like the “Boomer” generation they seem to degrade.
Well, misery loves company. It sucks that all of us have the same problem with these cowards in crappy cars, but I’m glad all of us have the same problem with these cowards in crappy cars. Good to know every corner of this country is dealing with the same morons, same behavior, same response, same impulse to shove ’em all in a room and stick a banana in their tail pipes, if you know what I mean. I’m in Atlanta. I’ve confronted every race, color, gender, age, class of individual in these piece-of-shit cars with their cheap-ass Pep Boys “make my car fart loud” kits….so this is not about race, age, or any specific group….unless you consider “asshole” as a group. So there’s that. And I agree with the commenter above who said catching these twisted fucks and fining the hell out of them would land city budgets in the black for years to come. Catch ’em. Throw ’em in jail. Fine ’em $1000. Impound their POS bucket of bolts. Post their stupid mug shot on a public idiot website. And return quiet to the world. Assholes. I don’t know when the chickens will come home to roost, but I have faith they will.
Until then, I’m in a high rise, right above a major highway where these assholes make their cars fart loud. If you see any of these assholes with egg splattered on their piece of shit cars, it’s from me. Cheers!
Catch ’em. Throw YOU in jail. Fine ’em $10000. Impound YOUR POS LIFE. Post YOUR stupid mug shot on a public idiot website. And return quiet to the world. Asshole
People purposefully making noise on the road with their vehicles is super distracting. Safe drivers have no real defense against this type of distraction. They’re forced to take their eyes off of the road and notice your obnoxiously loud vehicle. They could crash their car because of this distraction. This distraction could ruin the rest of their day, stress them out for the rest of their commute, and they could wreck their car later because of that stress. You caused that stress. This is assault. Don’t do it. Roads are designed to safely get drivers from point A to point B with minimal distractions and minimal stress. Some people handle stress differently, and simply making loud noises on purpose right next to their car at 70 miles per hour might actually be all it takes to set them over the edge. It shouldn’t happen on any road, ever.
For a pedestrian, It is very loud when one of these vehicles whiz by. They are a nuisance. If the law enforcement can not enforce regulation of noise levels, at least they should revise the law that a pedestrian or any one can stop these bikes and place the driver’s ear next to the muffler and press the accelerator (the vehicle still in park). These unruly drivers will feel exactly how noisy their vehicle is. No har, just hear the noise of your own vehicle that you are forcing others to listen.
I just want to share that I have the best dog. He is a schnauzer named Squire, age 6. He has salt and pepper fur with a cuddly demeanor. His greatest pleasures in life are long walks around the block, naps on the couch, and chomping on some ice cubes. He’s a true hall of famer. Mount Rushmore of schnauzers.
These illegal noisy vehicles and their lawbreaking drivers race 24/7 along the van Wyk expressway directly behind the Queens courthouse and in front of that same courthouse and the Borough President offices along the Queens Boulevard in Nyc and the traffic cops posted here just sit and watch and do nothing.
There is a solution: This problem will only be fixed when it’s taken seriously by government law-makers. Too loud? Stiff fine and vehicle confiscation. Law enforcement lax? Job termination. Those that make this happen will be called assholes by the assholes who hold good citizens hostage with their don’t-give-a-shit-if-my-rude-behavior-makes-your-life-miserable attitude.
I live in a reasonably affluent neighborhood in northern NJ. My young, “suburban redneck” neighbor, now about 35, finally moved after 10 years of noisy trucks, cars, leaf blowers, air ratchets, motorcycles, and stupid-loud parties. He was a man of few words, and when I first spoke to him about the noise from one of his ridiculously loud diesel trucks, his response was “sorry, not much I can do about it”. Not the most articulate gentleman however he was a trust-fund baby with seemingly unlimited money to buy all the noise makers he wanted, and without regard to his impact on other people. But he mostly calmed down as the years went by, got married and had a couple of kids. Mercifully, he moved away to a larger home. New family has arrived and they are normal. They get it. Finally, peace and quiet. Point is that if your noise problem is a neighbor, or the neighborhood in general, there is very little you can do about it. But thankfully, people grow up, and sometimes people move. Kind of a crapshoot who your neighbors are and who drives past your house with no mufflers. Good luck to everyone dealing with excessive noise. Keep hope.
Great to see a site like this. I live in a small town in northern New England that has monster trucks roaring through town all winter long, and those same trucks, plus some boom cars, and most of all lots of Hogs blasting through town during the spring, summer & fall. Soooooo sick of it. And as many people here have said, the cops don’t care. There’s no way some of these vehicles are legal, and they are definitely a nuisance in the legal sense. Knuckle-draggers get a cheap feeling of power from these crappy, loud vehicles, and they consider it one of their “freedoms” to make as much noise as they want. Vile.
And the unnecessary horn beeps when they lock those hunks of junk up to limp into the Cumberland Farms.
We don’t have to ticket all of em. Law enforcement could put out a few public service announcements and deliver some high profile citations that can be reported on by the media. People with noisy toys know who they are. The word would get around quick. Fear is a great motivator.

That’s the answer
Here’s some advice that might prove helpful.
I have the same problems as all of you. In particular, I had a couple of kids (20-somethings, brothers) with extremely loud vehicles that made my existence a living hell for far too long. I finally got the idea to contact their landlord.
In my state (perhaps yours as well) if you go to the website of your state treasurer you can enter the address of the property and get the property owner’s address. I wrote a letter to the owner of the property and politely detailed what the issues were. I included my return snail mail and email addresses.
Because of covid it took longer than it likely would have otherwise, but after a little less than a year I was able to get these troublemakers evicted. The landlord lost money because they were substantially behind on their rent, but he finally decided that enough was enough. It took me roughly 10-12 emails and developing a bit of a friendly rapport with the landlord, but it got rid of these horrible neighbors.
Now, if I could only work that same magic on the rest of the problem neighbors.
Good luck to all of you.
The brats doing the noise making are assholes that are immature and have never grown up.. They almost always come from trash homes, and have never been taught to respect ANY one.. Would it bother me to chunk a stick of dynamite into the bed of their truck as they pass… lolol.. Give them back their own torture, build an air cannon and have it waiting on them as they pass.. Or wire up some train horns to a post at ear level and hit it just as they pass the post.. Usually brats of that caliber only respond to equal punishment… If you have the electrical savvy, you can build a microwave device to momentarily disable their ignition, causing an engine backfire, hopefully destroying the engine… The Constitution guarantees the right to live in peace, if our happiness is being distressed, then it is legal to retaliate! it would be one thing “IF” these noisemaking bratmobiles were weekend hobby vehicles, but most of our terrorists are loud “daily” drivers.. This is when you know you are dealing with mental louses…
Anyone know exactly HOW to record the super low bass from the BOOM cars? I have an ass hat who drives by my back bedroom in the alley a couple times a week early in the morning, pauses and BLASTS the stereo. It’s terrifying and taking a toll on my health. My Ring cameras cannot record that deep bass, neither can my iPhone. How do I record this jerks loud music?
All car or trucks over a certain dB should be banned for driving at night, period. There shouldn’t be any doubt or complain about it. And during daytime should be restricted to certain areas. What some people and politics think POLLUTION means? Lack of education of course.
Well, take California, for example. Engine noise limit is 95dB in California. That’s still insanely loud, so it’s free for all! I saw it with my own eyes, when obnoxiously loud cars screamed by a police cruiser at an intersection and that police officer was totally oblivious.
In many cases, loud pipes on cars and motorcycles are used as assault weapons to physically hurt people. A couple of months ago, i was getting gas at a gas station in Citrus Heights, just East of Sacramento, CA. That particular street has been inundated with obnoxiously loud cars and motorcycles and there are residential neighborhoods on both sides of that street. As i was filling up my car, a newer Dodge Charger rolled in with modified loud exhaust, making those crackling sounds. Even while idling, the sound of his exhaust could be felt on my skin and on my internal organs. A 20-something exited that Dodge Charger, squirted a little bit of gas into the Dodge’s tank (he probably could not afford a full tank of gas). When he started his Dodge Charger back up, he revved his engine really loud while still being at the gas pump. The obnoxiously loud sound bounced off of and got amplified by the gas station awning. As he revved his engine with modified exhaust, he hurt my ears so bad, i had ringing in my ears for a couple of hours and i am pretty sure he damaged my hearing to some degree. After that incident, I now use ear plugs to protect my ears from such assaults by the loud exhausts.. So, yes, i am convinced that many loud car owners purposely use their modified exhausts as assault weapons to hurt people.
Don’t move to Texas ma’am, your ears will be “assaulted” daily.
Just coming across this page calmed my anxiety, as some asshats here in Texas drove by and woke my toddler. Good to know I’m not the only one who this dumb dumb hobby aggravates and so there’s hope for us to make changes. Loud unsuspecting surprise engine revving and acceleration 100% takes a toll on our health, thank all of you woke individuals that mention that. I have also tried complaining to police departments via email and not received a response, the 10,000 shelled out for new windows was worth it but should not be necessary. Good effort Guy Gould. While we’re at it, does anyone issue speeding tickets anymore? World’s going to shit.
I am a 30 year old home owner in north Phoenix and our city has been INVADED by fart cars & motorcycles from the ghettos of California. It is absolutely insane how much this neighborhood has changed literally over night. It has gotten so bad here that you literally hear a boom car (fart car) every 30 seconds. My house is tucked away in the back of the neighborhood away from major streets and I still hear them. Last night I slept with my window open to get some fresh autumn air (fresh clean are is becoming extinct in AZ) and I was woken up multiple times throughout the night by constant traffic from the SR 51 (3 miles away). 12:30am and it was a caravan of fart cars & motorcycles, and finally closed the window at 2am because the noise pollution was literally unbearable. TWO IN THE MORNING. WTF. Everywhere I go they are fucking everywhere. On the highways, neighborhood streets. All CA plates. Stop moving here please. The streets here are jam packed with imbeciles who don’t deserve to live in houses.
loud pipes are typically used by people that want to be noticed because they need attention and have nothing else to offer to make them feel good. they are just like taggers; notice how they only tag where the public can see it? its because they want to be noticed in their own messed up mental way.
i have almost had a heart attack many times when they suddenly are next to you with that popping super high rev crap, and being woke up all hours of the night as these spoiled brats knowingly get our attention, that’s what they want. I feel sorry for people much older than me; I wonder if anyone has had a heart attack suddenly from this super ballistic noise?
This is one area in which the U.S. would do well to emulate other countries, namely those in Europe. May European cities actively discourage driving even by physical changes to the cities such as permanently closing streets. They also intentionally make streets narrower and yield space to bicyclists and pedestrians. Some city centers ban cars totally. This usually increases business for local shop owners which is a beautiful side-effect.
Something that everyone seems to be missing in this excellent forum is the fact that we as a society have helped create this problem. In my experience… And I have plenty of it living beside two roads and a gas station that are plagued nearly 24/7 with young men revving their car engines and blaring their car stereos…This is a clear cry for help. These people are saying, “look at me… I’m over here… I’m important…pay attention to me… I am important! I’m powerful!”Rather than doing something worthy of praise or positive attention, they are acting out like two-year-olds to call attention to themselves in a society that generally treats them like insignificant pieces of trash. The intentional noise they make by revving their engines affects me terribly and the bass from their music literally shakes the inside of my apartment hundreds of feet away. I cringe every time I hear such individuals use the phrase ‘to piss off the neighbors”. To me, that is a shocking sentiment. But it is common among this segment of society, which seems to get enjoyment from the casual cruelty they are inflicting – or they are completely ignorant of the impact of their actions because that is the culture and environment they are familiar with. The individuals doing this are invariably poorly educated and/or minorities and/or lacking good role models and/or sociopaths. I’m not making excuses for these people, but it’s obvious that they are lacking social skills, opportunities and fulfillment in their lives. They don’t have or are not able to take advantage of opportunities available to others, and this disruptive behavior has become an outlet for that condition/stress. And it’s no coincidence that the pressures of the Covid era have exacerbated this problem. I believe that counseling as well as opportunities for these individuals to make real and meaningful contributions to society could change a lot of this behavior. In other words, instead of just punishing these individuals, we could do things to help them grow up. But we first have to recognize this as a society and (sadly) that may take a while. Here in small-town central Texas the problem is rampant and I at my wits end with it.
Noise monitors which are tamper-proof must be installed on every motor vehicle, both new and old. These noise monitors must instantly report the identity of vehicle owners for prosecution. Very costly fines and imprisonments should be incorporated together with suspension of drivers’ licenses and impoundment of motor vehicles. Quietude is a precious thing, and quietude for quietude’s sake should reign supreme over trashy, irritating, degenerate behaviors which lay waste to the magic of the earth’s natural beauty.
