Welcome to Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet

The Census Bureau reports that noise is Americans’ top complaint about their neighborhood and the major reason they wish to move. Ninety percent of calls to New York City’s quality of life hotline concern noise.

Excessive noise is a major public health problem. Excessive noise has been linked to hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing of the ears), sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disturbances, mental health impairment, impaired task performance, aggressive behavior, and chronic fatigue. Noise levels throughout the world are growing at alarming levels.

Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet is a non-profit organization dedicated to opposing excessive noise, especially from boom cars, leaf blowers, and motorcycles. Our mission is to elevate the issue of noise pollution with federal, state, and local officials, as well as to educate the public about the dangers of noise pollution. We have an extensive legislative agenda to fight noise.

Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet has local chapters in many states, which are conducting petition drives, testifying before city councils, hosting community meetings, speaking to community groups, and meeting with police officials.

Part of our mission is to increase public awareness of noise pollution. Our monthly “Noisy Dozen” award is issued to major noise polluters and has gained a significant amount of media attention. We have been featured in around 350 media stories, in such publications are USA Today, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and Time magazine. We have also been featured on “20/20,” CNN, and NPR.

Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet offers numerous resources to fight excessive noise in your community.

– Our “Ask an Expert” service offers assistance from a noise control engineer and a retired Houston police officer; thousands of noise sufferers have been helped.
– Our book, Guide to Modified Exhaust Systems: A Reference for Law Enforcement and Motor Vehicle Inspectors is an illustrated guide to illegal after-market exhaust systems.
– Our “How to Fight Noise” manual offers specific suggestions on how to reduce noise in your community.
– Our “Resource Room” contains local, state, and federal noise ordinances, as well as a model noise ordinance. This section also contains complaint cards, sample letters to businesses, contact information for elected officials and major corporations, and three radio public service announcements.
– Our position paper, “The American Noise Pollution Epidemic: The Pressing Need to Reestablish the Office of Noise Abatement and Control” is a manifesto which we distribute to federal officials.
– Our videos section contains examples of excessive noise from boom cars, leaf blowers, and motorcycles.
– Our collection of boom car ads features several dozen messages from electronics companies encouraging boom car boys to engage in violence and misogyny.

Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet has had notable accomplishments. One of our supporters was instrumental in persuading Elkhart, Indiana to create the nation’s strongest anti-noise program. A member in Youngstown, Ohio persuaded the city council to enact a much stronger noise ordinance. A number of members have written articles about their successes in fighting noise.

In addition, several members of Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet are undertaking a lawsuit against a manufacturer of illegal after-market exhaust systems.

Further, members of Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet have met with White House officials, EPA officials, and Congressional officials to discuss noise policy and enforcement.
