Chapel Hill:  Back-up beepers can be very loud and very annoying.  Individuals who live near construction zones are often forced to hear a constant “beep! Beep!  Beep!” all day long. The American Academy of Engineering reported that back-up beepers are the American public’s sixth most annoying source of noise.

Thankfully, there are several alternatives which can be presented to companies which employ back-up beepers:

  1. An “observer/ signal person.”  In other words, a human being who warns when there is a danger.

  2. A “white sound” alarm, manufactured by Brigade Electronics, which can only be heard in the danger zone (rather than from many blocks away).
